An Interview With

In this interview I talk to Anna all about music and vinyl.

Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?

For some time there I had lost my love for music. I mean I did listen to music daily, but it was not with the kind of passion I used to do since I was a kid till my twenties. Then due to some life altering events I found myself again from my true path in life, the path of loving music (how poetic!). I used to have this regular kind of instagram, the kind everyone has, with pictures of their breakfast and sunsets and toes on sand… Then one day I stumbled across some accounts of people who seemed to share my passion for music and I was hooked. I buried my old account and started to share pics of my records.

If you ask why vinyl, it’s simply cause it is my favorite format. But the main thing for me is music itself, I don’t really care if I hear it from spotify, cd, cassette, radio… But I prefer vinyl. Not because it has better sound or because I would be interested about some special editions. I don’t give a rats ass about any first pressings… But because I love all things with history, old furniture, vintage clothing, old movies… So vinyl goes hand in hand with that. Vinyl is simply beautiful. I love the way it’s almost a small ritual, when you put a needle on your favorite record.

How long have you been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?

In my twenties I used to have quite the collection of cd’s. I still have some of them left in my basement storage, but I don’t even have a cd-player anymore. Then life got in the way of collecting. I did have a nice collection of vinyl in a previous chapter of my life, but I had to start collecting again from scratch in 2018.
But you know, I don’t even think of myself as a collector. I am a music lover and my favorite format happens to be vinyl so all of my favorite albums I want to own in vinyl. I don’t even know how many I own. Not enough, I guess, but quality over quantity, right? Also I work as a midwife and in this country people do seem to really appreciate the help of someone when giving birth, but their appreciation doesn’t really show in paychecks and in Finland vinyl records are expensive af.

What’s your vinyl holy graill?

I don’t really have one. I mean, as I said before, I’m not that interested in any special first pressings or any super rare copys of some albums. All the records I buy, are records I actually listen to. And luckily so far the music I love has been easy to access and affordable. I would find it just plain stupid to buy a record that costs shit-load of money and then you could only store it in bubblewrap in a safe and never listen to it.

Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?

I find all these TOP-something questions always impossible. I listen to so many different genres and artists that it would be impossible for me to choose just five. I mean I adore all those gorgeous women with beautiful voices and character like Billie Holiday, Etta James, Julie London. Then I am obsessed with the unicorns among us mere mortals: Joanna Newsom, Honey Harper, David Bowie. And I can’t get enough of all the sad-boys: Sufjan Stevens, Novo Amor, Jeff Buckley, James Blake. I also couldn’t live without all them rappers with just the right attitude: Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, Childish Gambino, the Roots, the Fugees. And don’t even get me started with them wonder women: Tori Amos, Kate Bush, St.Vincent, Björk, Florence and the machine. Also in my heart I carry the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Kinks. And then there is all that jazz… You see, impossible!

If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?

Well I would love to go out on a date with the young George Harrison. He was and is the best Beatle. Have you seen those pics of him with his camera? So shy and so yummy at the same time… Also I wouldn’t say no to Pokey LaFarge if he would ask me out on a date. Feel free to tag him here.

Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?

Someone once told me I am all over the place with my music and movie taste (very eclectic, if you want to put it more nicely), but I’d say some of my all time favorite movies have been: Lost in translation, Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Some like it hot, Back to the future, My neighbour Totoro, The Big Lebowski, Dirty dancing, High fidelity.

My alltime favorite tv shows have been Mad men, the Office (UK!), Curb your Enthusiasm and I must say that I really enjoyed that Queens Gambit this year, even though I know nothing about chess.
