In this interview I talk to Marianna all about music, vinyl and The White Stripes.
Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?
I never intended to actually make a vinyl themed Instagram. I wanted to make an account where I could post what I wanted and to share my interests without feeling the need to please everyone. My account started as that, but then I started primarily posting my records, and sharing the music I was listening to. I ended up gaining a bit of a following just by doing that, and realized that there were so many other people doing the same. It just kinda happened!
How long have you been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?
I started collecting late 2017/early 2018. I never had anyone hand me down any records so I started right from scratch. I have around 150+ in my collection as of right now.
I guess by your username you’re a big White Stripes fan?
Yes, you could say that! When I created my Instagram I was super into The White Stripes. I was in the midst of collecting their discography when I made my account. The name ‘white_stripes_lady’ actually comes from that. Every time I went to my local record shop to buy another White Stripes album the owner would call me the “White Stripes lady” because at the time, he didn’t know my name.
What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what is your holy grail?
Hmm, I have to think about that. I have a few favourites that’s for sure. The first that comes to mind would be The Suburbs by Arcade Fire. Nothing special about the pressing of this one, but it was the first record I ever bought. It’s my favourite album of all time. Another favourite would be my Titanic soundtrack. It’s a beautiful blue pressing limited to 2500 copies. Then of course my signed Lumineers III album.
For holy grail, I’m not sure. I have a few first pressings of some Queen albums. I have A Day at The Races, Sheer Heart Attack, Jazz, The Game, and Hot Space!
Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?
Another tough one! Arcade Fire is definitely number one. They really changed my life. Of course The White Stripes, Queen, Big Thief, and I’m going to say Of Monster and Men. They all have left a huge impact on me.
If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?
When I get asked this question, I always say Freddie Mercury. That was my answer for years. Now I would say Neil Young. Imagine the stories he could tell and the advice he could give. Neil is probably my biggest inspiration in life. I’ve listened to his music my entire life, so to be able to talk to him just for a short period would be extraordinary.
Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?
I actually don’t watch too many movies. I watched the same few, being Titanic, The Great Gatsby, and The Young Victoria. I’ve recently finished Stranger Things for the first time and I really enjoyed that, so that would be a tv show I would recommend watching. Then for music I would highly, highly, highly, suggest Big Thief. That band is full of talent, and just blew me away.
