In this interview I talk to Dave all about music and vinyl.
Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?
Well at first when I joined Instagram; it was the 14 January of 2018; I posted a huge mashup of everything, from holiday, travelling to clothing pictures. It was a hard time for me so I seek a little bit of distraction, I had a terrible heartbreak that stayed for years. Guess this can happen when someone plays with your heart way to much, you are like dead inside. When younger i used to hear a lot of music and I must admit that for several years due to this toxic relationship I had forgotten a bit about music. But end of 2017, that’s when it kicked in again, I bought my very first vinyl: Johnny Cash Folsom Prison Blues and I begun to post my records. That’s were I realized that sharing my passion about music with other passionate people was the thing I wanted to do on Instagram. I made some new friends and the flow for music came again and hit me like a rock. I find myself living again thanks to the music and I was glad to be part of this amazing vinylcommunity. What a trip it is and I love every minute of it.
How long have you been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?
Well, since end of 2017, so about 2 to 3 years now. I have 700 hundred that I call my own little treasures but since my grandparents past away not long ago I received their collection, a lot of french music I dont really hear to be honest. So I’m around 1000 now.
What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what is your holy grail?
I believe my favourite is Rock Island Line by Johnny Cash. And about my holy grail, that’s a harsh question, I may say my whole collection haha But If I had to choose, I would say my whole Johnny Cash collection. I have 140 of him, yeah I’m quite a huge fan.
Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?
My top 5 is a big mix, and personally i could have go with a lot of memorable bands like the Stones, Pink Floyd etc. But I choose the ones I used and still use to hear, like a lot. Die Toten Hosen, some German punkrock at his finest, sure they get old and don’t play wild as they used to but it’s still remains one of my top favourites.- Nofx, damn this one I stopped counting how many times I saw them live. Always a huge success and I love what they do.- Tocotronic, my very first encounter with them was the CD ” Es ist legal, aber “, I totally fell in love, with the years their style changed but still remains as good as it was.- Ramones, I guess you can’t make a top 5 without any awesome classics. Love these guys! Waving The Guns, I heard about them in 2018, some German Rap at his finest. I found out Rap music isn’t that bad actually. I have their whole discography since.
I like your recreations of the some of the albums you post, how do you come up with some of your ideas?
I started not so long ago doing these, about just a few months. I always wanted to try them out, I thought at first that maybe people wouldn’t like them but it turn out this wasn’t the case at all. So I’m quite pleased with the results and I thank everyone for the love and the appreciation their share with me. I love arts in all forms and shapes, recreating these covers show my appreciation for the music and the artist. I really do love to recreate them. And my ideas usually come when I pull out a record, i look at it and yeah why not, let’s go with this one today. And being single gives you a lot of time to do crazy things, I love my madness.
If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?
That’s a pretty easy question hahaIf I could have dinner with Johnny Cash in person that would be the greatest thing ever. He’s someone you could easily look up to, sure he had downfalls in his life but he always came back stronger. I would probably just talking about his past, his best memories, his music and his love story with June. And from time to time ask for a song, that maybe we could sing along together. Even if I’m a terrible singer haha.
Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?
For movies, I could really recommend Korean cinema. Such great movies, true blockbusters, excellent actor play and some have this kind of real feeling that you can only find in Korean movies. If you are interested, you could watch ” The man from nowhere “, “Sympathy for Lady vengeance ” so as ” Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance “, ” memories of murder”, just to mention a few otherwise the list would be way to long haha. For series, I do love “Supernatural”, “the X-files”, and “Kingdom” it’s a Korean zombie serie on Netflix, some true amazing stuff! As for music, I can say that a lot of people have amazing music taste here on Instagram, can’t disagree at all. Non the less country and blues are not seen pretty much, nothing wrong with actual music but Hank William’s, Johnny Cash, Howling Wolf, Screaming Jay Hawkins or John Lee Hooker etc are worth to listen to, just to mention a few.
