An Interview With trumjohanns_plattor

In this interview I talk to Johann all about music, vinyl and prog Wednesdays.

Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?

I had already posted quite a few albums on my regular account and my kids got tired of seeing them. My eldest actually suggested I’d start a dedicated Instagram for all the records. So here we are Feb 8th 2018 and counting!

How long you been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?

I’ve had two major vinyl phases in my life so to speak; the first happened around my 13th birthday in 1989 where I bought my very first record. Mind you, this was when cd’s really had gotten popular so I was soon swept up in that movement. I probably managed to get 100+ vinyls back then but most of them were sold many years later.

The second, and still highly relevant, phase occurred in September of 2012 when I stumbled upon a discarded JVC Direct Drive in the recycling room.I read up on how to get a turntable in working condition and just went from there… It was a blast digging through the dollar bins at the thrift shops and flea markets.Pretty soon I realised this was becoming an obsession haha.
Currently I have 860 something lp’s and maybe 60 singles in my collection.

What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what is your holy grail?

I think it’s impossible to name only one favourite… But many of the albums I grew up with are there like POWERSLAVE, …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, SEASONS IN THE ABYSS, SPIRITUAL HEALING etc. The same goes for holy grails. Two of my favourite genres are prog and metal and almost all those classic albums are expensive in their original pressings. And yes, I am only interested in originals. Not necessarily FIRST pressings but still, original. It’s something about the inherent mojo I guess.

Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?

It really depends on genre but IRON MAIDEN is one classic that just always seem to make all the lists. Another favourite is GENTLE GIANT and for more extreme stuff AUTOPSY, CARCASS and DEATH.

You started #nudemetalweekend and #progwednesday, how is it all going?

It’s going real well! Prog Wednesday has it’s own little following with great contributions each week and lately I’ve seen some guys FINALLY catching on to nude metal weekend as well haha. It’s all good!

I’ve seen you’ve done some collabs with @shinglers_list lately who I recently interviewed. How did that come about and do you enjoy doing collabs?

Yes, that is an absolute blast! I’ve been chatting with and supporting Dave for quite a while and we always talk about different genres and albums really… the guy has a great MAIDEN collection and when we started discussing our fave album by them this colab idea popped up. He brushed off his Photoshop skills and there you go. Not sure what band we’re going to do next though, but we are both avid Thrash Metal fans.

If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?

A very good question and my answer will probably change daily, but today I will say JACO PASTORIUS. That guy seemed like a fun dude to hang out with haha

Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?

The 80s rule, man! And check out prog if you haven’t already… there is SO much beautiful stuff to discover especially outside the more well-known bands. Everyone needs to have MAGMA and PFM in their lives, that’s for sure.
