In this interview I talk to Maria all about music, singing, ballet and vinyl.
Maria: Hi, Im Maria, 32 years old ECE & preschool teacher and vinyl addict from Finland.
Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?
It was a beginning of 2019 and I wanted to start something new in my life. I had been collecting vinyl records for some time and saw couple accounts on IG where people posted their albums and discussed about music. I started to think if that would be a fun thing to do as well. My family and friends didn`t share the similar passion for vinyl records as I did, so creating @vinylfavorites was like a new year`s resolution but at the same time it was a way to connect with people who were as obsessed with music and records as I was.
How long have you been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?
I have always collected music. I bought my first CDs when I was seven years old. I quit buying CDs though when I discovered vinyl records; the format was so much cooler and in some way it felt more precious to hold a vinyl in your hands than a casual CD. My boyfriend bought us a turntable in 2015 (if I remember correctly) and actually he was the one who gave me inspiration to start collecting vinyl. (He is a huge David Bowie fan btw.) I have 665 vinyl records in my collection at the moment.
What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what is your holy grail?
That’s impossible question to answer, really. I don’t t own any rare albums, first pressings etc. I’m happy I have found some limited editions on a decent price but all my albums are my favorites in some way. I have always loved purchasing clothes and other stuff second hand, so if I have found some pre-owned vinyl records in great condition and in cheap price, I have always been really over the moon.
And about my holy grail.. Toto’s “Tambu” would be nice to own some day. And “The Shining” OST. My wantlist is actually much longer but one vinyl at the time…
Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?
Another impossible question haha! I have to make two lists:
My all-time favorite bands:
2) Led Zeppelin
3) The Beatles
5) Pink Floyd
Bands / artists I love deeply at the moment:
2) Killing Joke
3) Steven Wilson
4) Queens of the Stone Age
5) Nine Inch Nails
If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?
David Bowie, definitely. He was a legend and achieved so much during his long career as a musician and actor. I will always respect him.
I love some of your photos, they are pretty creative. Where do you come up with some of the ideas?
Thank you so much! When I started my account, I wanted to keep it anonymous; only my hand holding the album. But when I hit 1K followers I decided to post a picture where I´m holding a Rush album. I received so much positive feedback that I decided to post pictures of me with my albums more often. But my motto has always been and always will be: Keep it classy. I want my page to be aesthetically pleasing and “simple” but still look cool and rock. #waxcrayonchallenge posts have been always fun to create. The inspiration comes from the music itself, album covers, art or from other IG users.
You can sing too, how long have you been singing?
I sang in school a lot when I was a kid. And also played in a band (keyboards) when I was a teen. I have always been singing but when I started another band with my colleagues and friends couple of years ago, I wanted to try singing and playing keyboards at the same time. And it has been fun!
You also do ballet, how long have you been dancing?
I have been dancing adult ballet for five years now. It was a childhood dream that finally came true five years back when I attended to my first ballet class. THE BEST DECISION EVER!
How long have you been playing piano and is there anything you can’t do?
I have been playing piano (and accordion) since I was seven years old. Music has always been a huge part of my life.
I wish I could play guitar better (I know basic chords but that’s about it). And I really wish I could draw, not my cup of tea at all haha. I also wish I could have more patience in some things, especially when I’m learning something new (check the guitar playing part).
Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?
I love watching movies and TV shows. Some of my favorite movies are The Matrix, Amélie, Inception, The Shining, Rear Window, Call Me By Your Name and Blade Runner. Favorite TV shows are Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Office, Ozark, Better Call Saul, Peaky Blinders… the list goes on and on. I trust IMDB and its ratings a lot haha.
The latest music find for me was the band called Hypno5e. I heard one song and boom, ordered the album straight away. That`s pretty normal story for me when I discover music – sometimes one song is enough to insure me that the band / artist is worth the hype. Luckily my music taste is so wide that I can listen to almost anything. Too bad for my wallet though.
