In this interview I talk to Kathleen all about music, vinyl and dentistry.
Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?
Initially, it was just an account about my life. Then I made posts with several new vinyls and people from the vinyl community started following me. They were incredibly interesting, I decided to share my favorite music more. Soon i found many friends in the vinyl community all over the world and I am very happy about it, but my account is still not only about vinyl.
How long have you been been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?
I’ve been collecting vinyl for 8.5 years, the collection has 733 albums now.
I was a music fan since childhood thanks to my parents. My Dad had a huge collection of cassettes, so since 3 years old I have already listened to Springsteen, Rolling stones, Dire Straits, but it was vinyl that always fascinated me, I always wanted to collect them. My very first vinyl was given to me as a present by my boyfriend and it was a push to start the collection. It was “The little Willies” album, because I love Norah Jones very much. My second album was The Rolling Stones live, I got it as a present too. Then I started buying records when I was travelling to other countries, or at vinyl store in my city. I bought a turntable almost a year after. So before that I was a collector who had never listened to her vinyl.
What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what is your holy grail?
My favorite album since childhood was Bruce Springsteen “Born in the USA”, now I have 3 copies of this album from different editions. I could not resist. I would really like to have the first pressing of Springsteen or Led Zeppelin, it would be cool.
Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?
Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Nirvana and many, many others. It’s hard to choose from a wide variety of amazing music.
If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?
There are several options: Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Mick Jagger or David Bowie. In general, I would throw a party where I would invite all of my favorite musicians! Dream big, why not?
You’re a dentist are you still practicing in the current circumstances?
No I have been at home for almost 2 months now and for me it is a difficult time. I rarely rest for more than 2-3 weeks a year. This situation is very unusual for me. I love my job very much, but in these conditions of our country, it is not safe to work now. There is no defense measures against the virus, but I hope that by the end of May I will definitely return to work.
Do you model too? Some of your photos are great.
No, I’m not a model, but thank you very much for the compliment. My best friend is a photographer and offers me photoshoots. I am very much for it. Thanks to her, I have professional photos and the opportunity to learn some posing skills.
Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?
I love movies about music, personalities from the world of music, documentaries too: Walk the line, Ray, The Rolling stones: shine a light, Whiplash, The Pianist, Control, Bird, It might get loud, I’m not there, Cadillac records, Vinyl series. I also love science fiction movies: some classic like “Alien”, Star wars, Interstellar, Arrival, The fifth element and many more.
I love to watch live performances of favourite bands most of all, music festivals.
TV: Black mirror, Community, The Office, Master of none, Fleabag, Fargo, High fidelity. I also love watching TED talks.
I would also like to add, music and vinyl records is my passion. I am very sorry that in my country girls are rarely addicted to this. I hope that with every new year more young people will be involved with this passion – collecting records. I would like to do vinyl record conventions in my country, so we all could communicate, share our impressions. I want to develop vinyl community in my country, because good music is worth it. Talking about my biggest dream – I always wanted to own a coffee shop with music on vinyl playing there. So, I hope one day dreams will be real. I hope there will be more vinyl stores in my city, there’s only one vinyl store per one million inhabitants.
