An Interview With discdub

In this interview I talk to Paul all about music, vinyl and Oasis.

Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?

I guess I started the account so I can have my own little space to document my love for music. I already have an account for my 2nd love (Photography) but its more work based, so why not a music one? Vinyl is so photogenic too, I love nothing better than taking the album out of its sleeve, dusting it off, take a few photos, place it on the turntable and give it a spin. Making the IG account is definitely the best decision I’ve made, I’ve came across some great people in the vinyl community and get to see their collection and more importantly find new music.

How long have you been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?

I’ve been collecting music since a teen, mainly cassettes and CDs, I’m relatively a newbie when it comes to Vinyl, My then fiancée bought me a record player back in 2017 along with the Chasing the Sun Boxset of Be Here Now by Oasis, one of the many reasons I married her since then my favourite pastime is to collect every album on vinyl I own on CD/Cassette, it seems never ending! its even a tradition now when I travel I gotta buy a record in that city. last time I counted I’ve 260+ vinyl’s.

What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what is your holy grail?

Its like asking me to choose my favourite child haha, its got to be the Achtung Baby 20th Anniversary Edition Boxset (2011)

Not only is the album in my top 3 albums ever, but what makes it special to me is it was giving to me as a gift on my wedding day by my wife (see why I married her?).

My holy grail has to be the Oasis Columbia White label demo 1993 (insert Wayne’s World scene “oh yes it will be mine” here)

Like me you’re a big Oasis fan, what’s your favourite Oasis album and song?

Again its like choosing who’s my favourite kid, if I had to bring one Oasis album to a desert island it would have to be (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? only because any song on that album can transport me back to a time where I was picking up a guitar for the 1st time, being out all day with my mates, not a care in the world only who knows the chords off wonderwall? and who’s gonna chance going into the off licence to get some drink, and then there was the Oasis gigs around that time! it was just insane!

My favourite Oasis song is a toss up between Columbia & Champagne Supernova I cant choose one.

Do you think Oasis will ever reunite?

If you had asked me this before last summer id of said “I didn’t mind because I seen them so many times” but since then I went to see both Liam & Noel, now I’ve seen their solo tours anytime they’ve played in Ireland, but last summer I bought my 17 year old son to his first gig, NGHFB in Malahide Castle Dublin, it was a special day that’s documented on my IG, ill never forget halfway through the gig I glance at my son and he looked at me and said “that’s really Noel Gallagher up there da” & “I cant believe I’m hearing Stop Crying Your Heart Out da”  I knew exactly what he was feeling, I felt the same when I was 17 too.

Then came LG in November 3arena Dublin, I went to both nights, first with my 7 year old daughter, seating of course! To hear her sing not only the oasis songs but the solo stuff just blew my mind. The 2nd night I went with all the lads, including my son, standing this time! I’m stood in the same venue I seen Oasis the 1st time when I was 17, only this time I’m standing with my 17 year old son listening to Liam absolutely flatten the arena. Now put all those solo gigs together and multiply it by 1000 and that’s what Oasis is!

So to answer the question, YES I really hope they reunite because we all need it! especially the new fans they need to see and feel what its like, and so do I, I’ve seen them plenty of times but never appreciated what I was seeing.

Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?

1: The Beatles

2: Oasis

3: U2

4: Kings Of Leon

5: Kasabian

If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?

Has to be Noel Gallagher. You only need to watch the best of him on YouTube to know he would be great crack, the night would probably end up in bono’s gaff too so 2 birds with one stone.

You do photography, what photography do you prefer to do and how long have you been doing it?

I’m a wedding photographer of 8 years and I love my job, especially when the 1st dance is an Oasis song. Joking aside its an extremely fulfilling job as I’m part of someone’s big day and I’m there to capture it forever. I love all types of photography, id love to shoot a few gigs though! I did managed to sneak my camera into Liam Gallagher’s Warm up gig in the Olympia Theatre 10th of June 2017( my wife’s birthday BTW she didn’t mind me going, yet another reason she’s married haha) I got a band for the pit and got some cracking shots of Liam 8feet away! the gig itself was mind blowing, but knowing I got to photograph LG was the icing on the €30 gig ticket.

Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?

I just watched Guy Ritchie’s new flick The Gentlemen, its honestly his best movie since Snatch! Hugh Grant is Amazing!

If theres a TV show id recommend its “Gomorrah” a mafia drama set in Italy….brilliant!
