An Interview With Marco Tossa

In this interview I talk to Marco all about music, vinyl and DJ’ing.

Marco: My name is Marco and I’m 44 years old. I live in Tossa de Mar, a small village on the catalan coast 1 hour north from Barcelona.

My parents used to have a record store and I was raised in that environment so music was always there. My father used to record mix tapes for me with all the summer hits every year when I was a kid so I guess I got hooked pretty soon. I worked there for more than 10 years, it was the perfect job, but we ended up closing the business in 2003 due to internet and the changing times in the record industry.

Since then, I worked as a barman in a bar my family owns and since the last 5 years I manage a pub with a good friend specialized in craft beers called LA GAMBA (instagram: @bar_la_gamba) and I love to DJ’ing from time to time specially with 45’s.

Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?

I started my instagram account back in 2011, 2012, but it wasn’t about vinyl in particular… I always liked photography so I was trying my skills and sharing my hobbies, music and vinyl included. After a while I started to post more vinyl and nowadays is the 95% of the content.

You have a good following, how are you finding it all?

I’m very grateful with the following, in the last year had raised quickly maybe to connecting with some other vinyl freaks and play challenges, that is very fun to do.

How long have you been collecting records and how many do you have in your collection?

I started collecting records when I was about 11 years old… having a record store made it easier for me. I started with cassettes, then vinyl shortly after and CD’s when 90’s arrived. I but never stopped buying vinyl.

I’m very proud of my record collection, I have a lot of vinyl and CD’s, but I’m gonna be honest I never count them near 5000 vinyl easily.

What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what’s your holy grail?

My favorite vinyl, wow! That’s a difficult question. I don’t know, I’m happy to own a copy of Leathür Records Mötley Crüe’s “Too Fast For Love” (their record label before they got signed by Elektra) or some OG pressings from The Doors, but I’m not sure they’re my favorites. I guess it changes depending of what I’m listening to at that moment. My “holy grail” also changes depending on which record I’m obsssessed to get at that moment, right now is a 7″ called “Scopitone” by the french singer Dani, there’s one on Discogs but it’s 200 euros!!!

Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?

The Doors

The Cult

The Black Angels

The Stooges

16 Horsepower

If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?

I would love to go for dinner with Iggy Pop, what a legend. He’s funny, interesting and very smart sure it would be a hell of a dinner.

I’ve seen some of your photography, you have some great photos.

Thanks a lot!! I really like photography, even with records, sometimes I try to do different stuff… I love landscapes, objects, when I’m lucky to travel, etc… nowadays with the phones you’re always ready to take some pictures I Love that!!

Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?

I love David Lynch, Tarantino, Cohen Brothers and Jim Jarmusch.

My favorite TV shows are Deadwood, Six Feet Under and Sopranos.

Lately I watched a couple of movies “The Hunt” and “Vivarium” that I really enjoyed. I also watched The Mandalorian, it’s great!

On music… I dig a lot Rose City Band (project from Moon Duo’s singer) (thanks @marcsgsanchez)

A band from L.A. called Split Moon ( thanks @spinningendlessly)

and the latest Black Lips album is pretty great too…

One of the greatest things about the vinyl community is to share our passion for music, recomend albums, bands and put some new artists on your map, or hidden gems that you didn’t know about… FANTASTIC!!!
