In this interview I talk to @meeseeks_vinyl all about music, vinyl and Rick and Morty.
Why did you decide to start a vinyl themed Instagram?
I started on Instagram showcasing craft beer in 2016. I started getting a little more artistic with it and started incorporating vinyls with the beer posts and eventually it just kind of snowballed on it’s own after that, so basically around November 2018 my account became full on vinyl 24/7 and meeseeks_vinyl was born.
You have a good following, how are you finding it all?
My page is all about positivity (just like 311 preaches). No matter what music you like or dislike I am never going to be like “hey they suck” or whatever, so please don’t bring negativity to me as well, we can have a discussion/debate but let’s keep it civil. Music brings us all together and in these uncertain times I think that is a good thing. We all hear music differently and that’s what makes it special. I also have found a lot people in this community with similar tastes and those who don’t I follow have opened my ears to different music and I appreciate that and I hope maybe I did the same for them, too.
How long have you been collecting vinyl and how many do you have in your collection?
I started collecting actually in 2016, I got tired of the the digital music thing and just wanted to be in touch with the art again. I remember growing up and always looking forward to reading the liner notes and lyrics in my favorite artist Albums/Cassettes/CD’s that I purchased and wanted to feel that again. It was always neat to me when you were reading the liner notes and it credited a band member from another group possibly playing lead guitar on a certain track, to me that’s so dang cool. There is just something about holding the work of the artists in your hands when it’s all said and done, after all their hard work creating it and at the end of the day it’s in your hands, it’s a beautiful thing, it’s a connection. As of right now I have 274 vinyl.
What’s your favourite vinyl you own and what’s your holy grail?
Can it be a tie? My favourite vinyl is a tie between Queens of the Stone Age “Songs for the Deaf” and Brendan Benson “One Mississippi”. I was over the moon late last year in when it was announced that both were getting a proper reissue. Queens of the Stone Age is my favorite group so I might have to say my holy grail is their self titled album, it would complete my collection of theirs. I don’t want a bootleg of it, I think it deserves a reissue as well, here’s to hoping.
You started #2000stuesday how’s it going with that?
It’s been a fun month and a half or so since I started it. I can only thank the wonderful vinyl community for supporting it. I was just a person who had an infinity for any artist that came out during the decade of 2000-2009, I always felt it was a decade that never got the proper credit for influential music that came out during that period. That was my major reason for being the rabble-rouser behind it. I think it’s amazing people look forward to it and I always have fun re-posting everyone’s stories from it. Seeing everybody’s eclectic choices each week just makes it all worth it.
I take it by your username and posts you’re a big Rick and Morty fan?
What gave it away? Absolutely. Infatuated, consumed, all in…it’s the funniest, smartest, and dumbest show on TV all at the same time and that makes it special to me. Been there since the Season 1, the only frustrating thing is Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon can’t seem to get their sh*t together and give us consistent seasons.
Who’s in your top five of favourite bands?
Toughest question ever….ok here it goes,1. Queens of the Stone Age2. LCD Soundsystem3. Deftones4. Radiohead5. Anything Jack White is in.
If you could have dinner with any musician from any time who would it be and why?
Josh Homme hands down. He is “Ginger Elvis”! The coolest dude on the planet to me. I would just love to have a couple cocktails and just hear him tell stories about life in “Rock-n-Roll”. To me he is the last of dying breed of just cool rock stars with that swagger, plus just an amazing and talented musician and producer as well.
Any recommendations on movies, tv shows or music?
Besides Rick and Morty? I am not a big go to the movies kind of guy unless it’s a Marvel movie. I basically just watch Rick and Morty, The Office (of course), South Park, and whatever is on Disney +(Love The Mandalorian), Netflix and Hulu. I am really digging “Devs” on FX/Hulu. Nick Offerman is great in it but he is in everything he’s in. Music, besides my usual, been really listening to a lot of Margo Price & Best Coast lately. Got my fingers crossed for the Deftones to save 2020 and hopefully release that new album.
